Holly's Holiday Reads - Round 7

ree

It's that time again. Summer reads are here! There are some great books in here but tell me what you love to read! I'm always keen for a recommendation.

The Crash by Frieda McFadden

I have become quite obsessed with Frieda McFadden and am working my way through all of her books. This woman is a rockstar - a brain surgeon in real life who writes best-selling New York Times novels in her "spare time". Amazing! Another psychological thriller, this story follows a woman called Tegan who is 8 months pregnant and crashes her car during a snow storm. She finds refuge with an older couple but their cabin becomes a trap and Tegan can't leave. This has so many twists and turns, I loved it. I'm not giving any more away - just read it!

Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan

I read this book awhile back based on a Wellspringer recommendation (thanks Jodi) and I should have put it on the book recs ages ago! This is a story of human connection and relationships. The story follows a woman who returns with her son, Asher, to her hometown after leaving an abusive husband. Asher starts dating a new girl called Lily from school but when Liy is found dead, Asher is seen as the prime suspect. This story is emotionally draining but beautifully written. It was very thought provoking and I recommend a read.

The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins

This is a deviation from my usual book recs but I'm adding a self-help book as this is the book that every person needs to read! (or audio-book it if you don't like reading). It's a book about focusing on what you CAN control - your reactions and your choices and letting go of trying to control other people's behaviour. If we stop wasting energy on things we cannot change - like other's behaviour, opinions or actions - then we can find greater peace, feel calmer and less frustrated. This is the book I needed to read a decade ago (if only it was out then). Every person who has read this book has told me they have taken a valuable message from it.

The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni

If you are into fantasy series, then this one is for you. This is book 1 of 3 and it tells the story of a young woman called Kiva taken into a notoriously dangerous prison with her father when she was a young girl. When the Rebel Queen is sent to prison, barely alive, Kiva is ordered to keep her alive (as the prison's healer) for a trial. With the Rebel Queen too sick to participate, Kiva steps in to take her place. This is part Hunger Games, part Fearless, part Prison Break all mashed into one. It's exciting, fast-paced and I have just finished the triology. Worth the read.

The Teacher by Frieda McFadden

This book is another psychological thriller about a couple who are both teachers but all is not as it seems. With a student affair, deception and revenge all interwoven in one plot - it will have you on the edge of your seat. A perfect holiday beach read that you won't be able to put it down.

Till next time Wellspringers,

Love Holly

xx
